The project

Our ambitious initiative in collaboration with European Space Agency (ESA) under the contract 4000143384/24/NL/EG is set to transform three renowned Greek observatories – Helmos, Skinakas, and Holomondas – into state-of-the-art optical ground stations (OGS’s). This strategic enhancement is aimed at bolstering satellite communication capabilities within Greece, fostering advancements in space communication technologies.

Under the agreement signed on 20 March 2019, ESA and the Greek government, via the Ministry of Digital Governance, launched the GreekCONNECTivity project as part of the Greek National Satellite Space Project. Funded by the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) under Regulation (EU) 2021/241 and aligned with Greece’s Recovery Plan approved on 6 July 2021, this initiative aims to enhance Greece’s satellite capabilities. It focuses on developing, producing, and launching versatile small satellites for secure connectivity and multiple services, leveraging Greece’s advanced observatories for high-speed optical and quantum communications.

The project encompasses a comprehensive development and acquisition plan for the essential hardware and software components required to facilitate high-precision optical communication with Leo Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites through state-of-the-art technologies from Cailabs and Xairos companies.

Key upgrades include:

  • Advanced Optical Systems: Installation of cutting-edge optical telescopes and associated instrumentation designed for satellite tracking and data relay.
  • Communication Infrastructure: Development of robust quantum communication links and protocols to ensure seamless data exchange between the ground stations and orbiting satellites.
  • Software Suite: Custom-designed software solutions for station operation, including satellite tracking, data processing, and user interface systems, ensuring efficient management and operation of the ground stations.

By upgrading these observatories, we create a powerful network for optical satellite communication that enhances Greece’s role in the global space community, supports scientific research, and opens new avenues for technological innovation. Stay tuned for updates as we embark on this exciting journey to elevate Greece’s space communication infrastructure.
